Xbox Wi-Fi Connection issues with WMM

Xbox Wi-Fi Connection issues with WMM

I ran into something interesting the other day; my friend called me to let me know he could not connect his Xbox to Wi-Fi. He knows I've been studying wireless for a while now and I was up for the challenge. I got remote access to his machine and took a look at his Calix router from the local ISP.

The wireless configuration page was extremely basic, but we verified the SSID, passphrase, and security settings. Everything was close to default and couldn't see anything strange. The Xbox had issues getting an IP address for hours, so I was trying to get them connected ASAP.

Since I was doing this 100% remote, I was limited with my options for troubleshooting, but luckily the desktop I was connected to has a wireless adapter. I ran the wlan show network mode=bssid command on their windows machine. The house was using wireless extenders and I wanted to see if the extenders were causing any trouble but couldn't see anything too crazy. I was getting ready to start a wireless capture to do a deep dive but ended up getting the issue resolved seconds later.

The entire time while troubleshooting, I was also facetiming my friend and his cousin. I was able to do everything on the windows machine myself (thank you screenconnect), but I had no visibility to the Xbox as the router never saw it even trying to connect. After going through the advanced settings on the Xbox we discovered that WMM was disabled. I had them enabled it and the Xbox got an IP address almost instantly. I was really upset with myself for not running a capture during that because it really got me curious. At this point the job was done, they were able to connect to Xbox live and it's been working flawless since. The one thing I didn't think about was if statically setting the Xbox would help. I plan on testing this will my own equipment once I get properly moved to my new home. I will make a follow up once I have time to properly test this out again.

To summarize, if your Xbox cannot get an IP address and WMM is enabled on your router/AP. Try adjusting the advanced network settings on the Xbox. Let me know your thoughts and questions.

Thank you, Wi-Fi Dad
